Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. It is curable if detected in early stages.

The common symptoms of breast cancer are:

A lump in the breast A lump in the armpit Change in the size OR shape of the breast Dimpling / thickening/ redness of the skin An inverted nipple; Rash on the nipple Discharge from the nipple Pain or discomfort in the breast that does not go away

Diagnosis of Breast Cancer can be done by the following:

  • Mammography
  • Ultrasonography (USG) of breasts
  • Biopsy
  • CT scans or PET scan

Treatment Options for Breast Cancer

Treatment options are as follows:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Hormone therapy
  • Molecular targeted therapy.

The patient will need a combination of some or all of these options for better disease control.

Surgical operations are as follows:

1. Mastectomy

Complete removal of one or both the breasts depending on the disease and future risk of developing cancer in the non affected breast.

Mastectomy

2. Breast conservation Surgery / Breast Sparing Surgery / Lumpectomy

Removing only the tumor and a small margin of normal breast tissue surrounding the tumor. This type of surgery is established as a safe option for most women with early breast cancer.

Breast Conservation Surgery
  • Preserves much of the appearance and sensation of breast
  • Less invasive surgery
  • Shorter recovery time
  • The most obvious advantage - Cosmetic Outcome
  • Equivalent to mastectomy in terms of survival and local disease control (oncological safety)
  • Women who have breast conserving surgery are usually happier about their bodies and have a better self-image
  • Sexuality is less affected

3. Oncoplastic

Oncoplastic procedures are often a part of breast conservation surgery. On most occasions breast reconstruction (partial/total) is done along with the cancer surgery and in certain situations it is delayed.

We offer a variety of breast reconstruction options to our patients depending on their age, profession, socioeconomic standing and desired aesthetic outcomes.

Oncoplastic Surgery
Oncoplastic Outcomes
  • Oncoplastic breast surgery adds to better cosmetic outcomes.
  • High patient satisfaction and improved quality of life in all the age groups.

4. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a technique which identifies the first affected lymph node by cancer in armpit. Such a lymph node is then subjected to frozen section biopsy (rapid biopsy method performed during the surgery); if no cancer is detected, then no other lymph node will be removed, but if cancer is found in that lymph node, more nodes may have to be removed (called axillary dissection).

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
  • If the sentinel node is negative for cancer, more extensive lymph node surgery may be avoided.
  • Decreases surgery related morbidity, without jeopardizing oncological outcome
  • Improves quality of life
Sentinel Node Outcomes

Your breasts may be such an important part of your identity - your sense of who you are - that you'll go to great lengths to preserve them. That's completely acceptable!
